How to prep for your makeup and hair appointment

Welcome to YA Artistry. We will make the list short and clear to help you prep for your makeup and hair appointment. ☺

Trial

  • Don’t wait till the last minute, book your trial soon, as there will be more flexibility and availability, especially before the wedding season.

  • You have been working hard on planning your wedding, you don’t want to leave any regrets, so we highly recommend you to take your time and think about what you want to look like on your wedding day.

TIPs:

a)    while searching the desired makeup looks, try to find some that have similar face shape, eye shape, and skin tone with yours, it will help to get an idea about the style and colour that suits you the best.

b)    It can be risky to try something new for your wedding. If old Hollywood glam is not something you are into, you likely won’t feel like yourself if you do the Hollywood glam. If you always have your hair down, most likely you will feel more comfortable to have your hair down on your wedding day. When you look back on your wedding day, you want to feel like yourself, a better version of yourself.

  • Bring reference images to your trial, or send it to us beforehand. Try to identify what you like about the make-up and/or hair in the image. It is the best way to get everyone on the same page.

  • If you plan to have spray tan for your wedding, it would be ideal to have the same shade on the trial day, so you can see how the makeup/hair will look on you.

Please read the Preparation for Your Appointment as below.

Makeup

Before your Wedding or appointment,

  • Exfoliate your skin and lips: You can do it 2-5 days prior, just make sure to use products that are gentle on your skin. Makeup sitting on top of dead skin will make it look heavier, so exfoliating dead skin will help to create a smooth surface for makeup application, and makeup will stay on your skin better. Makeup can transform your look with colours, but it has limits on changing your skins texture. Please do NOT to exfoliate your skin the night before the wedding, try to do it three to five days before the wedding depending on your skin type. This will allow your skin to accept the makeup without any redness on the wedding day.

  • Having a regular skin care routine is very crucial for the health of your skin, as well as makeup application. Makeup does not stay well on dry skin. So ensure to use proper skin care products that suit your skin type regularly, using facial mask 2-3 times a week will help a lot.

  • Mask It Up: If you have oily skin, try a purifying clay mask. If your skin is dry, use a hydrating mask to moisturize and plump. Do not use any masks or cosmetics that you do not normally use the night before the wedding. It may cause skin problems.

  • No NEW skincare products: please do NOT use NEW skincare products including new masks the night before the wedding. You will run the risk of breakouts and irritation.

  • Beauty sleep: The best thing you can do at this point is to get some shut-eye—you’ve done your work, now take some time to relax (or at least try to). So you can avoid dark circles.

  • Hydrate: Your skin needs a lot of moisture, Drink lots of water too, but only in the day, as drinking plenty of water at night will cause water retention. If you're really thirsty, limit yourself to one to two sips.

Wedding Day or On the day of your makeup appointment,

  • Please clean your face well. Ensure there is no makeup residue, like mascara, lash glue, eyeliner etc.

  • If you want to or if you have your favourite skincare products, please apply basic skin care products ONLY, like toner, lotion, and a little bit of face and eye cream. Do NOT overly apply moisture cream before application of makeup. It will make the foundation ‘slip and slide’, and can make the skin look too shiny. ‘A little dab’ll do ya’.

  • Please wear any clothes that can be easily taken off and on, so it doesn’t smug the makeup when you need to get changed.

HAIR

Often, people have the traditional mindset towards hair preparation. The dirtier the better. It is because we thought grease is great to help with grip and holding your hair style. Times have changed. Dirty hair is not preferred. In fact, dirty hair will weight your hair down. We have so many great hair products in the market nowadays, these hairsprays can help to create the grip and hold, and if needed, we can easily make your hair “dirty”, but it is not really possible to make dirty hair clean unless washing it. With that being said,

  • Please wash your hair the night before or morning of if your hair get oily quickly, and arrive with 100% clean and dry hair.

  • If you have fine and soft hair, or if your hair does not hold curls for long time, try to avoid applying any products that have too much oil and silicon prior to the appointment. You might even want to skip that last conditioner or just do a very quick rinse at the very end.

  • If you have frizzy, texture hair, please smooth your hair with blowdrying and frizzy free product and ready for styling.

  • If possible, please wear a button up or loose shirt as to not wreck the hair and ruin the makeup.

Last but not the least, please bring pictures of the hair and makeup styles you like. It will help to better understand your preferred style. Based on the information provided, we will discuss the makeup or hair style in detail, give suggestions with our expertise and customize the look that suits you the best.
